Τέλος εποχής για Διαμαντίδη

Ο διεθνής γκαρντ ανακοίνωσε την απόφαση του να μην αγωνιστεί ξανά με την Εθνική ομάδα του μπάσκετ.

Μετά τον αποκλεισμό της εθνικής ομάδας από το μουντομπάσκετ, ο Δημήτρης Διαμαντίδης ανακοίνωσε, εμφανώς συγκινημένος την απόφασή του να αποσυρθεί από την Εθνική ομάδα μπάσκετ.

«Αυτή ήταν η τελευταία μου συμμετοχή με την Εθνική. Το τελευταίο μου παιχνίδι. Ευχαρίστησα όλους τους συμπαίκτες μου. Πέρασα πάρα πολύ έντονες στιγμές μαζί τους όλα αυτά τα χρόνια.

Είναι πολύ σημαντικό για έναν παίκτη να αγωνίζεται στην Εθνική. Κάθε κύκλος όμως κλείνει και η ζωή συνεχίζεται. Για μένα η Εθνική τελείωσε. Επαναλαμβάνω, είμαι πολύ ευτυχισμένος που έζησα όλα αυτά τα πράγματα, όλες αυτές τις στιγμές με αυτή την ομάδα και με αυτούς τους συμπαίκτες».

Ο Δημήτρης Διαμαντίδης, με τα χρώματα της εθνικής έχει κερδίσει:
-Χρυσό μετάλλιο στο Ευρωμπάσκετ 2005 του Βελιγραδίου
-Αργυρό μετάλλιο στο Μουντομπάσκετ 2006 της Ιαπωνίας

Το 2007 ψηφίστηκε από τους αθλητικούς συντάκτες ως κορυφαίος του ελληνικού αθλητισμού. Επίσης ανακηρύχθηκε από το ιταλικό περιοδικό Superbasket ο κορυφαίος ευρωπαίος παίχτης της χρονιάς
