Woodstock...40 χρόνια
Woodstock: Όταν η γενιά των λουλουδιών μεσουρανούσε
Το τριήμερο Φεστιβάλ του Γούντστοκ, στις 15-17 Αυγούστου του 1969 αποτέλεσε ορόσημο μιας ολόκληρης εποχής, των «παιδιών των λουλουδιών» που διακήρυτταν την αγάπη και την ειρήνη –και τα ναρκωτικά- ως τη λύση σε όλα τα ανθρώπινα προβλήματα. Σαράντα χρόνια μετά, το γεγονός έχει αποκτήσει διαστάσεις θρύλου. Ο γκουρού της γκόντζο δημοσιογραφίας, Hunter Thompson, περιγράφει με τον καλύτερο τρόπο το κλίμα που επικρατούσε εκείνη την περίοδο, στο μυθιστόρημά του, Φόβος και Παράνοια στο Λας Βέγκας.
«Το Σαν Φρανσίσκο στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’60 ήταν ένας πολύ ιδιαίτερος χώρος και χρόνος που άξιζε να συμμετέχει κανείς. Ίσως σήμαινε κάτι. Ίσως όχι. Όμως καμία εξήγηση, καμία επιλογή λέξεων, μουσικών ή αναμνήσεων δεν μπορεί να αγγίξει την αίσθηση της επίγνωσης ότι ήσουν εκεί, ζωντανός, σε αυτή τη γωνιά του κόσμου και του χρόνου…
Υπήρχε τρέλα σε κάθε κατεύθυνση, ανά πάσα στιγμή… Μπορούσες να πετύχεις σπίθες παντού… Υπήρχε μια φανταστική καθολική αίσθηση πως ό,τι κάναμε ήταν σωστό, ότι κερδίζαμε. Και αυτό ήταν το κλειδί, η αίσθηση της αναπόφευκτης νίκης μας επί των δυνάμεων της Παράδοσης και του Κακού. Όχι με κάποιο κακό ή στρατιωτικό τρόπο. Δεν το χρειαζόμασταν. Η ενέργειά μας απλώς θα επικρατούσε… Είχαμε τη δυναμική. Είχαμε καβαλήσει ένα πανύψηλο κύμα… Τώρα, μετά από καιρό, μπορείς να πας σε έναν λόγο στο Λας Βέγκας και να κοιτάξεις δυτικά και, με τα κατάλληλα μάτια, μπορείς να δείς το σημείο που χτύπησε το κύμα και κύλησε πίσω…"
Αυτό ακριβώς το κλίμα «έπιασε» το τριήμερο φεστιβάλ, το οποίο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Γούντστοκ της Νέας Υόρκης στις 15-17 Αυγούστου του 1969. Το φεστιβάλ Ειρήνης και Μουσικής, όπως είχε ονομαστεί, πρέσβευε ακριβώς αυτή την επανάσταση των hippies, που επεκτεινόταν πολύ πέραν της μουσικής, στα υψηλά ιδανικά της παγκόσμιας ειρήνης και της αγάπης.
Δεν είναι υπερβολή να πει κανείς ότι είναι το Φεστιβάλ που άλλαξε τη ροκ μουσική όπως την ξέρουμε. Συγκαταλέγεται, άλλωστε, στη λίστα του Rolling Stone με τις 50 στιγμές που άλλαξαν την ιστορία του Rock and Roll.
Προσέλκυσε 450.000 οπαδούς του τριπτύχου Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll, οι οποίοι κατασκήνωσαν στους χώρους του φεστιβάλ, επιδιδόμενοι αφενός σε τριήμερα όργια, αφ’ ετέρου σε βροντερά συνθήματα για παγκόσμια ειρήνη και επιστροφή των αμερικανών στρατιωτών από το Ιράκ (ουπς, συγνώμην, από το Βιετνάμ), καθώς και οριστική παύση των ρατσιστικών διακρίσεων εντός της χώρας. Το Woodstock αποτέλεσε ιδανικό τόπο εκδήλωσης του γενικευμένου κοινωνικού αναβρασμού από την αμερικανική νεολαία, που διακήρυττε έναν νέο τρόπο ζωής, γεμάτο αγάπη και μακριά από προσωπικά συμφέροντα.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι στο Γούντστοκ, τα μεγάλα ονόματα που έπαιξαν ήταν οι The Who, ο Jimi Hendrix, οι Sly & The Family Stone, η Janis Joplin, οι Creedance Clearwater Revival, οι Jefferson Airplane, οι Crosby, οι Stills, οι Nash & Young & The Band, ο Joe Cocker, o Santana, οι Grateful Dead και ο Johnny Winter.
Έχει τη σημασία του επίσης ότι στο φεστιβάλ – ορόσημο της ροκ είχαν αρνηθεί να παίξουν οι Beatles επειδή ο John Lennon δεν είχε καταφέρει να τους συγκεντρώσει, οι Led Zeppelin καθώς είχαν επιλέξει να τραγουδήσουν σε άλλο φεστιβάλ με καλύτερη πληρωμή, ενώ είχαν αρνηθεί τη συμμετοχή τους οι Byrds και ο Bob Dylan, ο οποίος δεν συμφωνούσε με τις αρχές που πρέσβευε το κίνημα των hippies. Την πρόσκληση για να συμμετάσχουν αρνήθηκαν επίσης, τόσο οι Doors, λόγω της γνωστής αντιπάθειας του Jim Morrison στις μεγάλες συναυλίες εξωτερικού χώρου, όσο και οι Jethro Tull, με τον Ian Anderson να δηλώνει ότι δεν θέλει να περάσει το Σαββατοκύριακο παίζοντας για «άπλυτους χίπιδες».
Αν και αρχικά το φεστιβάλ είχε σχεδιαστεί με καθαρά κερδοσκοπικά κριτήρια, η πολύ μεγαλύτερη προσέλευση κόσμου σε σχέση με το αναμενόμενο, το μετέτρεψε σε τεράστια γιορτή αγάπης. Οι φράχτες έπεσαν, επιτρέποντας και σε όσους δεν είχαν εισιτήρια να εισέλθουν στους χώρους του φεστιβάλ, με τη συνολική προσέλευση να εκτιμάται στις 450.000.
Το εισιτήριο συμμετοχής στο τριήμερο (που έγινε τετραήμερο λόγω βροχών) φεστιβάλ ήταν 18 δολάρια, εάν είχε αγοραστεί προκαταβολικά και 24 δολάρια στις πύλες των συναυλιακών χώρων. Πλέον, τα αυθεντικά εισιτήρια από το φεστιβάλ έχουν μεγάλη συλλεκτική αξία.
Παρά την έλλειψη οργάνωσης και υποδομών για τετραήμερη φιλοξενία τόσων χιλιάδων κόσμου, ο ειρηνικός χαρακτήρας του φεστιβάλ διατηρήθηκε με τα κοινά ιδανικά των παρευρισκόμενων να διατελούν ρόλο ζωτικής σημασίας, σε αντίθεση με τις δυο απόπειρες αναβίωσης, που χαρακτηρίστηκαν από πάμπολλα επεισόδια μεταξύ των θαμώνων. Ωστόσο, στο τετραήμερο καταγράφηκαν δυο θάνατοι (ένας από υπερβολική δόση ηρωίνης και ένα ατύχημα) και δυο γεννήσεις.
